A man who stepped in to disarm a knife-wielding stranger during a tense police standoff in Adelaide’s northern suburbs says he was shocked after officers allegedly used a Taser on him moments later, despite his efforts to prevent anyone from being injured.
The dramatic incident unfolded on Hampshire Street in Mansfield Park, where police had been negotiating with an agitated man armed with two knives for nearly an hour. CCTV footage captured the extraordinary sequence of events, which has since sparked debate over police actions.
Good Samaritan intervenes
According to witnesses, Mark Grabsch, a local Mansfield Park resident, saw the armed man behaving erratically in the middle of the street while police attempted to resolve the situation.
Concerned that someone could be seriously injured, Grabsch decided to intervene. He approached the man and managed to knock both knives from his hands, effectively disarming him before police moved in.
While speaking to the media after the incident, Grabsch said he acted only to protect others.
“I intervened because I didn’t want to see any harm to him or anyone else.”
Tasered moments later
Seconds after disarming the man, Grabsch himself became the target of police action.

While speaking to the media, Grabsch said he was left confused by the officers’ response.
“I don’t know why they did that to me,” Grabsch said.
The Good Samaritan said he believed he had helped police by removing the immediate danger posed by the two knives.
Nearly one-hour standoff
The confrontation began when the armed man appeared on Hampshire Street carrying a knife in each hand.
Police established a safety cordon around the area and attempted to negotiate with him for almost an hour in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation.
As negotiations continued, Grabsch stepped in and successfully disarmed the man before officers moved in and brought the situation under control.
Medical assistance
Authorities have not indicated that Grabsch suffered any serious injuries after being Tasered, and there have been no reports that either he or the armed man required emergency hospital treatment. Police have also not released further details about the condition of the knife-wielding man.
CCTV footage captures incident
Security camera footage recorded the critical moments of the confrontation, including Grabsch disarming the armed man and police deploying the Taser shortly afterwards.
The footage has since circulated widely, prompting public debate over whether the use of force against the Good Samaritan was justified.
