Sydney, Australia: Police are searching for four masked men after a violent home invasion in Sydney’s southwest left a young man with life-changing injuries and a family traumatized.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when a group of armed intruders allegedly forced their way into a home in Greenacre and targeted a family believed to have been keeping a large amount of cash at the property.
Home Invaders Strike Before Dawn
According to investigators, a dark-colored SUV arrived outside the residence at approximately 2 a.m.
Police allege four men armed with machetes then forced entry into the family home and confronted a 23-year-old man.
During the violent confrontation, the victim suffered catastrophic injuries when one of the attackers allegedly struck him with a machete, severing his left hand.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly afterward.
Paramedics provided urgent medical treatment before the man was transported to hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Father Forced to Open Safe
Police say the victim’s father emerged from a bedroom after hearing the disturbance and was confronted by the intruders.
The offenders allegedly demanded cash and forced him back into the main bedroom where a safe was located.
Authorities claim the safe was opened and a substantial amount of money was stolen before the group fled the property.
The attackers reportedly escaped in the same SUV before police arrived.
Targeted Attack, Police Believe
Investigators believe the home was specifically targeted because the offenders were aware that significant cash reserves connected to a family-owned business may have been stored at the property.
Despite the apparent planning involved, police say there is currently no evidence linking the family to organized crime.
Authorities described the victims as respected members of the local community who are well known through their long-established business operations.
Community in Shock
The brutality of the attack has shocked residents in the area.
Neighbors described the family as hardworking and highly regarded, expressing disbelief that such a violent crime could occur in their community.
Police have described the incident as an extremely traumatic experience for the entire family, particularly the young victim whose injuries are expected to have lifelong consequences.
Investigation Underway
Detectives are examining forensic evidence, reviewing potential surveillance footage, and appealing for witnesses who may have seen a dark SUV in the Greenacre area during the early morning hours.
Authorities are particularly interested in any dashcam footage or information that could help identify the four offenders.
No arrests have been made, and investigations remain ongoing.
Separate Sydney Stabbing Incident
In a separate incident on Friday night, a 32-year-old man was hospitalized after an alleged stabbing inside a unit in Sydney’s inner west.
Emergency crews responded to reports of an altercation at a residential property in Newtown shortly after 10:30 p.m.
Police allege the victim was stabbed by a 54-year-old man known to him.
The injured man was transported to hospital in stable condition, while the older man was taken into police custody following treatment for minor injuries.
The incidents come amid heightened concern over a series of violent attacks reported across New South Wales in recent days.
Police continue to investigate both matters.
