An Auburn family is speaking out after the heartbreaking loss of their 7-year-old daughter, Hazel Bryant, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while playing near her home.
Hazel, described by loved ones as a cheerful and energetic child, enjoyed dancing, dressing up, and spending time with her twin sister, Ivy. The sisters often played together, pretending to be characters like Elsa and Anna from Disney’s Frozen.
The tragedy occurred just days before Hazel’s eighth birthday. According to her family, a neighbor was backing out of a driveway when the accident happened. Police reportedly reviewed security camera footage that appeared to show the vehicle beginning to reverse before Hazel moved behind it, leaving the driver unaware of her presence.
The devastating loss has inspired the Bryant family to launch a safety campaign aimed at preventing similar accidents. They are encouraging drivers, particularly those with vehicles manufactured before 2018, to install backup cameras.
The family noted that aftermarket backup camera systems are widely available and can cost anywhere from $30 to $150, depending on the features and installation requirements.
Hazel was also known for her attachment to a stuffed bunny named “Hop Hop,” a gift she received following lung surgery. The toy became such an important companion that her family attached an AirTag to it to ensure it was never lost. Now, Hop Hop serves as a cherished reminder of Hazel’s life and memory.
Friends and community members have organized an online fundraiser to support the Bryant family as they cope with the tragedy. The family says the overwhelming support from neighbors and friends has helped them navigate an unimaginably difficult time.
As they continue to grieve, Hazel’s parents hope their message about driveway safety and backup cameras will help save lives and prevent other families from experiencing a similar loss.
