Canadian Teen Admits Role in $13 Million Crypto Fraud, Spent Millions on Luxury Lifestyle
A Canadian man has pleaded guilty to a money-laundering conspiracy after U.S. authorities accused him of helping steal more than $13 million through a sophisticated cryptocurrency fraud scheme and spending the proceeds on luxury cars, private jets, and an extravagant lifestyle.
Trenton Richard David Johnston, who recently turned 20, entered a plea agreement in the United States and has agreed to be deported back to Canada following sentencing.
According to court documents, Johnston overstayed a U.S. tourist visa after entering the country from Ontario in October 2024. Investigators say he was living lavishly in the Miami area while allegedly laundering money obtained through cryptocurrency scams.
The case began to unravel during a traffic stop in Miami in March when Johnston was found riding in the back of a luxury Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Deputies reportedly detected the smell of marijuana and later discovered suspected amphetamine tablets in his possession.
After seizing Johnston’s phone, computer, and handwritten notes containing cryptocurrency account access codes, federal investigators uncovered evidence linking him to a large-scale crypto theft operation.
Authorities say one victim in California was tricked by scammers posing as representatives from Google and crypto-security company Trezor. Believing their accounts had been compromised, the victim provided authentication codes that allowed fraudsters to gain access to digital assets.
Prosecutors allege Johnston and his associates then transferred and laundered the stolen cryptocurrency. In text messages recovered by investigators, Johnston allegedly celebrated one theft, writing to an accomplice that they had done “some crazy” things.
Federal prosecutors described Johnston’s spending habits as extravagant. Court records show that over a three-month period, more than $1.19 million was spent on luxury purchases and entertainment.
Among the purchases were a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, two BMW vehicles, expensive jewelry, luxury accommodations, private jet rentals, exotic car rentals in Los Angeles, and travel expenses for friends.
Authorities also allege that Brandon Michael Tardibone helped facilitate some of the purchases and provided housing to Johnston while he was attempting to avoid immigration authorities.
Johnston remains in custody and will be sentenced at a later date. U.S. prosecutors say the case highlights the growing threat of cryptocurrency-related fraud and social engineering scams that target digital asset holders.
