Fake ‘Monks’ Accused of Targeting Auckland Pedestrians in Bracelet Scam

Pedestrians in central Auckland are being warned about an alleged street scam involving individuals posing as Buddhist monks who hand out bracelets before aggressively demanding money.

Reports suggest the suspects approach people on busy city streets, place bracelets on their wrists or offer them as gifts, and then pressure victims into making cash donations.

Authorities and consumer advocates have urged members of the public to be cautious when approached by strangers offering unsolicited items, particularly if they later request payment or donations.

Witnesses claim the individuals wear monk-like robes to appear legitimate and trustworthy, targeting unsuspecting pedestrians and tourists in high-traffic areas.

Police are encouraging anyone who feels threatened or believes they have been targeted by the scam to report the incident and provide any relevant information that could assist investigators.

Residents are advised not to accept unsolicited items from strangers and to walk away if they feel pressured to hand over money.
