One Person Critically Injured Following Alleged Assault in Central Auckland

A person has been taken to hospital in critical condition following an alleged assault in central Auckland on Tuesday evening.

Emergency services were called to Wellesley Street East near Rutland Street at about 6.45pm after reports of a serious incident.

Acting Inspector Warwick Stainton said officers arrived to find one person suffering critical injuries.

“One person was located with critical injuries and has been transported to hospital,” Stainton said.

Police confirmed that one person has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

A significant police presence remained in the area throughout the evening, with cordons established around the scene while investigators carried out inquiries.

Stainton said the cordons would remain in place as police continued to examine the scene and gather information about the circumstances surrounding the assault.

Photographs from the scene showed police vehicles and officers stationed along Wellesley Street East as members of the public were diverted around the cordoned area.

Hato Hone St John confirmed it had an ambulance at the scene shortly after 7pm.

Police have not yet released further details about those involved or the events leading up to the alleged assault.

Investigations remain ongoing.
