Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada: A Nova Scotia couple experienced a terrifying ordeal after their vehicle was stolen with their beloved dog still inside, leading to a dramatic roadside confrontation with the suspected thieves.
Maggi MacDonald and Peter LeBlanc were shopping in New Glasgow, a town about 160 kilometres northeast of Halifax, when their vehicle was allegedly stolen from a Sobeys grocery store parking lot.
LeBlanc had left his four-year-old Lab-husky mix, Tim, inside the vehicle while he quickly went into the store to pick up groceries. Because of the warm weather, he left the engine running with the air conditioning on and the key fob inside.
When he returned about 20 minutes later, the vehicle had vanished.
“At first I didn’t really want to believe that my car was stolen,” LeBlanc said. “I thought I might have parked in the wrong spot.”
Meanwhile, MacDonald, who was at home in nearby Trenton, received an alert from her bank informing her that her credit card had been used. After checking her account, she discovered suspicious purchases had been made at a gas station in Westville, several kilometres away.
Using the information available to them, the couple began searching for the vehicle. Their efforts paid off when they spotted the stolen car travelling on a rural road in Pictou County.
Fearing for Tim’s safety, MacDonald and LeBlanc confronted the occupants in a desperate attempt to recover both their vehicle and their dog.
“All I can say is that in that moment, we weren’t thinking about ourselves, we were just thinking about getting our dog back,” MacDonald said.
“Our pets are like our children.”
The confrontation ultimately resulted in the couple being reunited with Tim, bringing an emotional end to the frightening ordeal.
The incident serves as a reminder to motorists not to leave vehicles running and unattended, even for a short period, as thieves can quickly take advantage of the opportunity.
Police continue to investigate the case and the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft.
