INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A 14-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Indiana University graduate Brett Scrogham, a case that has shocked the Indianapolis community and raised questions about violent crime involving juveniles.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) announced that the teen was taken into custody on Wednesday following an intensive investigation into the May 28 shooting death of Scrogham.
Authorities have not publicly identified the juvenile suspect due to his age.
Beloved IU Graduate Killed in Parking Garage
Investigators say Scrogham, a graduate of the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, was shot while sitting in his vehicle on the third floor of a downtown parking garage near the Indiana Convention Center.
According to police, Scrogham was on his way to meet his parents for a sporting event when the shooting occurred.
Emergency responders found him suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He later died from his injuries.
The killing stunned family members, friends, and former classmates who described Scrogham as a talented and well-respected young professional.
Investigation Led to Juvenile Arrest
Police said security camera footage, witness statements, and physical evidence helped homicide detectives identify the suspect.
The teenager was arrested during a SWAT operation at an apartment complex on Indianapolis’ west side.
Investigators are examining whether the shooting may have been connected to an attempted carjacking, although officials have not released a final determination regarding motive.

Prosecutors Considering Adult Charges
The suspect is currently being held in juvenile detention without bond.
Because of his age, the case initially falls under juvenile court jurisdiction. However, prosecutors will review the evidence and decide whether to seek a waiver that would allow the teenager to be tried as an adult.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to file a probable cause affidavit outlining the evidence gathered during the investigation.
Legal experts note that factors such as the seriousness of the offense, the suspect’s maturity level, criminal history, and intent may influence whether adult charges are pursued.
Community Reacts to Tragedy
Officials expressed sorrow over both the loss of Scrogham and the young age of the accused suspect.
Police leaders described the case as a heartbreaking reminder of how a single act of violence can devastate families and communities.
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors determine the next steps in the legal process.
