Emergency services were called to Wellesley St East, near the intersection with Rutland St, at about 6.45pm after reports of an assault.
A person was found with critical injuries and was transported to hospital, where they later died.
Police confirmed a 23-year-old man has since been charged with murder in relation to the incident.
The accused is expected to appear in the Auckland District Court.
A large police presence remained at the scene overnight as investigators carried out enquiries and examined the area.
Police have not yet released further details about the victim or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
