NYU Student Arrested Over Swastika Flag Display During Graduation Week Event

A New York University student has been charged with multiple hate crimes after allegedly displaying an antisemitic flag on top of a campus building during a graduation-week event.

Authorities identified the student as Alexander Stepnowsky, 23, of Fairfield, Connecticut. Police say he used his NYU identification card to access the Steinhardt School building and raised a flag featuring two swastikas, a Star of David, and NYU-related symbols during the university’s annual Grad Alley celebration on May 13.

The flag was removed shortly after it was discovered.

Stepnowsky was arrested after surrendering to police and now faces charges including burglary as a hate crime, criminal trespass as a hate crime, and aggravated harassment. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment and was released without bail.

The incident drew strong condemnation from university officials and Jewish community leaders. The New York City Council Jewish Caucus described the display as a hateful act that invokes memories of the Holocaust and creates fear within the Jewish community.

NYU officials also denounced the incident, calling the symbols antisemitic and offensive. The university said it will pursue disciplinary action in addition to the criminal case, with possible penalties including expulsion.

According to public information, Stepnowsky was a senior studying music technology at NYU at the time of the incident.

Key Takeaway

The case has renewed concerns about antisemitism on college campuses and highlights the serious legal consequences that can result from acts alleged to target religious or ethnic communities. Criminal proceedings and university disciplinary actions are expected to continue in the coming months.
