FAIRFIELD, Calif. — An 18-year-old was killed and three other people, including an 11-year-old child, were injured when gunfire erupted outside a Northern California high school following a graduation ceremony on Wednesday evening.
According to the Fairfield Police Department, the shooting occurred around 7:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Fairfield High School near Schafer Stadium. The campus was hosting a graduation ceremony for Sem Yeto High School at the time.
Authorities said the violence broke out shortly after the commencement ceremony had ended, as graduates, families, and guests were leaving the event.
One Person Killed, Three Hospitalized
Police confirmed that four people were struck by gunfire during the incident.
An 18-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released the victim’s identity and have not confirmed whether the individual was a graduating student.
Three additional victims — an 11-year-old child, a 20-year-old adult, and a 25-year-old adult — were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
Large Police Response
The shooting prompted a major emergency response as officers secured the area and launched an investigation.
School district officials described the incident as a large-scale emergency that unfolded immediately after the graduation ceremony concluded.
Authorities worked through the night gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses who were present during the celebration.
Search for Suspect Continues
As of Thursday morning, no arrests had been announced and police had not identified a suspect.
Officials stated that investigators are actively searching for the person responsible for the shooting.
Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez said law enforcement agencies were conducting an extensive search operation following the violence.
Despite the ongoing investigation, police indicated there is currently no known threat to the broader community.
Community Shocked by Graduation Tragedy
The shooting has left the Fairfield and Suisun City communities shaken, as what should have been a celebration of student achievement turned into a scene of tragedy.
Parents, students, and local residents have expressed concern following the incident, which occurred in the presence of families gathered to mark an important milestone.
School officials have not yet announced whether counseling services or additional security measures will be provided in the aftermath of the shooting
