Essex Mother Jailed for Life After Poisoning One-Year-Old Son With Fatal Drug Mixture

CAMBRIDGE, England — A woman from Essex has been sentenced to life imprisonment after murdering her one-year-old son by giving him a fatal mixture of milk and medication shortly after learning he would be removed from her care.

Emma Barnett, 36, was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on June 5, 2026, and must serve a minimum of 22 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Tragedy Followed Family Court Decision

The court heard that on the day of a crucial family court hearing, Barnett collected medication from a pharmacy while caring for her young son, Oakley.

After being informed that Oakley would be taken into care, Barnett left the hearing and stopped responding to people concerned about her welfare and that of her child.

Her disappearance prompted a police search.

Police Found Mother and Child in Loft

Officers eventually attended Barnett’s home and discovered both mother and son concealed in a loft space.

According to prosecutors, officers attempted to communicate with Barnett by telephone and through the loft hatch.

Initially, she told police that Oakley was sleeping. She later admitted what had happened, telling officers: “I have killed him.”

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but Oakley was pronounced dead.

Fatal Mixture Caused Child’s Death

Evidence presented during the trial showed that Barnett deliberately prepared a bottle containing milk mixed with medication and gave it to her son.

Medical experts testified that the substances caused Oakley’s death.

Following a detailed investigation and trial, a jury found Barnett guilty of murder.

Life Sentence Imposed

At sentencing, the judge imposed a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Nicola Pope described the case as deeply tragic and said Barnett intentionally administered a dangerous mixture that proved fatal.

Prosecutors said the case relied heavily on medical evidence and forensic analysis to establish exactly how the child died.

Family Seeks Closure

The death of Oakley has had a profound impact on family members, investigators, and those involved in the case.

Prosecutors expressed hope that the conclusion of the criminal proceedings would provide some measure of comfort and justice to those who loved the young child.
