Nanny Hospitalized After Alleged Baseball Bat Attack While Walking Child in Sugar Land

SUGAR LAND, Texas — Police are investigating after a woman working as a nanny was allegedly attacked with a baseball bat while walking a child in a Sugar Land neighborhood, authorities said.

The incident occurred Friday morning along Fluor Daniel Drive near Creekbend Drive. According to the woman’s husband, Dannel Caban, his wife was caring for and walking a baby when an unknown man approached her.

Caban said his wife told him the suspect pulled up in a vehicle, exited while carrying a baseball bat, and initially asked for directions.

“Right away she saw the guy with a bat in between his legs, and she got scared and went back,” Caban said.

According to Caban, the man then approached his wife and struck her in the back of the head with the bat. He said she suffered multiple blows to her head, arms, and hands as she attempted to protect herself and the child.

“She fought trying to save the baby,” Caban said. “She fought back.”

Despite her injuries, the woman reportedly screamed for help, prompting the attacker to flee the scene.

“She started screaming really loud,” Caban said. “That’s when he took off.”

A passerby stopped to assist the injured woman and contacted emergency services.

The victim was transported to a hospital, where she remains under treatment. According to her husband, she suffered broken bones, extensive bruising, and injuries requiring stitches. Doctors expect her to remain hospitalized for at least one or two more days.

“When I got to the hospital, I found my wife covered in blood, her face, her clothes, her arm broken,” Caban said.

The child she was caring for was not reported injured during the incident.

The Sugar Land Police Department confirmed that officers are actively investigating the case and are reviewing the area for surveillance footage that may help identify the suspect. Authorities have not released a detailed suspect description and have not announced any arrests.

Investigators have not determined a motive for the attack.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could assist the investigation to contact the Sugar Land Police Department at 281-275-2020.

The investigation remains ongoing.
