MONTREAL, Quebec — A 23-year-old man from Châteauguay has been arrested after allegedly driving at extreme speeds and leading police on a pursuit through the Montreal area early Saturday morning.
According to Quebec provincial police (Sûreté du Québec), officers spotted a vehicle without licence plates traveling on Highway 15 North near the Samuel De Champlain Bridge at approximately 2:30 a.m.
Police said the driver fled after noticing officers. During the pursuit, the vehicle was allegedly clocked at 217 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Highway 20 West.
Authorities said officers from the Montreal Highway Station pursued the vehicle along Highway 20 West and Route 138 West toward the Mercier Bridge.
The pursuit ended with assistance from the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, who located the suspect’s vehicle in the parking lot of a business within the Kahnawake territory.
Investigators allege the suspect attempted to flee once again after being located. During that attempt, the vehicle reportedly collided with a police cruiser, leaving the suspect’s vehicle inoperable.
The 23-year-old driver was arrested at the scene without further incident.
Police said the man could face multiple charges, including fleeing from police and assault with a weapon stemming from the collision with the police vehicle.
Authorities impounded the suspect’s vehicle for 30 days, while his driver’s licence was suspended for seven days pending further proceedings.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to review evidence and prepare potential charges.
In a statement following the arrest, Quebec provincial police reminded motorists that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on the province’s roadways and urged drivers to obey speed limits and cooperate with law enforcement.
