Man Charged With Mother’s Murder After Arrest in NSW Bushland

A 33-year-old man has been charged with the alleged murder of his mother after police tracked him down to a remote bushland area on the New South Wales South Coast.

The investigation began on Tuesday when police were alerted that a 58-year-old woman had failed to return home after leaving her northwestern Sydney residence the previous afternoon.

Detectives later established that the woman had travelled to Winston Hills to meet her estranged son, Ante Popovic, at John Curtin Reserve near Dodson Crescent.

Following an intensive search and investigation, officers located Popovic in an isolated section of bushland on the NSW South Coast just days after his mother’s disappearance.

Police subsequently charged the 33-year-old with murder.

Authorities allege the woman was killed after meeting her son on Monday afternoon. However, investigators are continuing efforts to locate her body, which has not yet been recovered.

The case has shocked the local community, with police describing the investigation as complex and ongoing. Specialist officers remain involved as search operations continue in an effort to provide answers for the victim’s family.

Popovic was refused bail and is expected to face court over the alleged offence.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
