Fire at Wellington Airport Triggers Evacuations and Flight Disruptions
Hundreds of travellers were evacuated from Wellington Airport on Thursday evening after a fire broke out inside the airport’s domestic terminal, sending thick smoke across parts of the facility.
Emergency services were called to the airport shortly after 7:15 p.m. following reports of smoke and fire within the terminal building. Multiple fire crews, including Airport Fire Service personnel and firefighters from across the Wellington region, responded to the incident.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the terminal as firefighters worked to locate and contain the source of the blaze. Authorities deployed several firefighting appliances, including high-reaching aerial units, to assist in battling the fire.
Wellington Airport confirmed that the southwest pier and sections of the main terminal were evacuated after a smoke alarm was activated. Hundreds of passengers were forced to leave the building while emergency crews secured the area.
Despite the dramatic scenes, officials said no injuries had been reported.
The airport also confirmed that incoming flights were temporarily diverted while emergency operations were underway. Passengers were advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest information regarding delays, cancellations, and rescheduled services.
Police assisted with evacuations and crowd management as firefighters worked to bring the situation under control.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are expected to begin once the scene is declared safe.
Airport authorities said further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
