A dramatic police operation unfolded in Sydney’s south-west on Thursday afternoon when officers drew their firearms and arrested a driver following a brief pursuit through suburban streets.
The incident occurred in Cabramatta West shortly after 2 p.m., where witnesses saw police surround a vehicle before ordering the driver out at gunpoint.
Authorities allege the incident began when officers attempted to stop a 35-year-old man for a roadside breath test. Police claim the driver failed to comply, triggering a short pursuit through nearby neighbourhoods.
The chase came to an end when officers intercepted the vehicle and removed the driver from the car before placing him under arrest.
Police further allege that the man threatened officers with a knife during the arrest. One officer suffered minor injuries during the confrontation and was treated at the scene.
Video captured by bystanders showed the tense moments as armed officers moved in on the vehicle in broad daylight, drawing attention from motorists and pedestrians in the busy area.
The man remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities are expected to lay multiple charges relating to the pursuit and the alleged confrontation with officers.
