A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition after falling from a moving train in Sydney’s inner west on Saturday morning.
Emergency services were called to the rail corridor between St Peters railway station and Sydenham railway station shortly before 8:30 a.m. following reports that a teenager had fallen onto the tracks.
According to police, officers were informed that the boy fell from a train compartment while the train was travelling along one of Sydney’s busiest rail routes.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the teenager at the scene for serious head and arm injuries before transporting him to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Authorities said he was in a critical but stable condition.
Investigators have not yet confirmed exactly how the incident occurred. However, reports suggest the teenager may have been involved in “train surfing” — a highly dangerous practice in which individuals ride on the outside of moving trains.
Witnesses reported that the boy fell from the side of a moving carriage onto the tracks, prompting a rapid emergency response.
Police and transport authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. No further details about the teenager’s identity have been released.
The incident has renewed concerns about train surfing, which has been linked to numerous serious injuries and fatalities due to the extreme risks posed by high speeds, overhead infrastructure, and falls onto rail tracks.
