A 35-year-old woman is in critical condition after being attacked by a shark while swimming at Sydney’s Coogee Beach on Saturday morning. The attack occurred shortly after 11 a.m. as the woman was swimming between the flags, approximately 30 metres from shore. Witnesses described hearing a “chilling scream” moments before shark alarms sounded across the beach.
Beachgoers and emergency responders rushed into action. An off-duty volunteer surf lifesaver helped pull the woman from the water, while off-duty doctors, lifeguards and lifesavers immediately began administering first aid on the beach.
The victim suffered severe injuries to her arm and leg. Tourniquets were applied at the scene before paramedics transported her to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where she remains in serious condition.
Witnesses said the beach quickly descended into chaos as swimmers were urged to leave the water.
Among those present was Fran Kelly, who was swimming nearby when the attack occurred.
“I didn’t see the shark, but when I got out, people had gone in to pull this woman out,” Kelly said. “I could see the shark bite, which was big and awful.”
Authorities have launched an operation to locate the shark, with jet skis patrolling the area and beach closures put in place as a precaution.
Popular eastern suburbs beaches including Coogee Beach, Clovelly Beach and Maroubra Beach have been closed and are expected to remain shut for at least 48 hours.
The incident has left the local community shaken, with many expressing disbelief that such a serious shark attack occurred at one of Sydney’s most popular swimming beaches. Authorities continue to monitor the area and are urging people to stay out of the water until further notice.
