A father and his teenage daughter narrowly escaped injury after a masked gunman allegedly attempted to carry out a targeted attack during a school pickup in western Sydney. Police are investigating the incident as a possible gangland-related assassination attempt.
The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. in Fairfield West, near a local school. Authorities say a 44-year-old man was sitting in a parked ute with his 15-year-old daughter when a man dressed in black and wearing a balaclava approached the vehicle and pointed a handgun at them.
According to police, the father and daughter quickly exited the vehicle and ran from the scene. Neither was physically injured, although both were left shaken by the terrifying encounter. CCTV footage reportedly captured the pair fleeing together as the gunman escaped.
Investigators are examining whether the firearm malfunctioned before any shots could be fired. Media reports indicate detectives are also exploring whether the intended target may have been an innocent relative of prominent underworld figures rather than someone directly involved in criminal activity.
The attempted attack has heightened concerns about ongoing gang violence in Sydney, particularly because it unfolded during a busy school pickup period with children and families nearby. Residents described the incident as alarming and dangerous for the local community.
NSW Police have launched a major investigation and are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant dashcam footage to come forward. Authorities are continuing to investigate the gunman’s identity and possible links to organized crime groups.
