OTTAWA, Canada — An Indian-origin police officer serving with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has died after being struck by a vehicle while responding to an investigation in northern Ontario, authorities confirmed.
Provincial Constable Tarun Bali, 29, suffered critical injuries during an incident near the town of Hearst on Tuesday and was later pronounced dead.
The OPP announced that an 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Bali’s death. The accused also faces two counts of flight from police and two counts of dangerous driving.
Officer Was Responding to Investigation
According to OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique, officers were attempting to locate and apprehend the suspect after he allegedly left a hospital where he had been undergoing assessment under Canada’s Mental Health Act.
During the operation, the suspect allegedly struck Constable Bali with a vehicle.
Authorities said other officers at the scene were able to take the suspect into custody shortly afterward.
Young Officer Remembered
Constable Bali had served with the Ontario Provincial Police for approximately two-and-a-half years and was assigned to the James Bay Detachment. He had previously worked with the Dufferin Detachment in southern Ontario.
Police officials described Bali as a dedicated officer whose death has deeply affected colleagues across the province.
“Today is a heartbreaking day for the Ontario Provincial Police family,” Commissioner Carrique said while announcing the officer’s death.
Investigation Underway
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Authorities have not released additional details about the events leading up to the fatal collision.
The accused remains in custody and is expected to appear before the court to face the charges.
Tributes Pour In
Following the announcement, fellow officers, community members, and government officials expressed condolences to Bali’s family, friends, and colleagues.
His death marks a significant loss for the Ontario Provincial Police and highlights the risks law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties.
As the case proceeds through the court system, the murder charge remains an allegation, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
