Infant Found on Roadside in Blenheim Was Stillborn, Police Confirm

Police have confirmed that an infant whose body was discovered on the side of a road in Blenheim last month was stillborn.

The baby was found on May 19 on Wairau Bar Road after a machinery operator made the discovery shortly before 1:30 p.m. Emergency services were called to the scene, and an investigation was launched.

Inspector Simon Feltham said on Monday that a post-mortem examination determined the infant had been stillborn.

Despite the finding, police are continuing efforts to locate the child’s family and are particularly concerned about the welfare of the mother.

“We are still urgently appealing for the family of the infant to come forward, as we are concerned for the welfare of the mother,” Feltham said.

Police said they want to ensure the mother is safe and receives any necessary medical treatment or support. Investigators also hope to discuss arrangements regarding the baby’s remains with the family.

Authorities are asking anyone with information that could help identify or locate the mother or other relatives to contact police through the 105 service, either by phone or online.

The investigation remains ongoing.
