The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified and will lead the investigation, as is standard procedure when a police officer is seriously injured in an incident involving the public.
As investigators examined the scene, the Leaside Bridge was closed in both directions. Millwood Road was also shut down between Overlea Boulevard and Donlands Avenue, causing disruptions for early-morning commuters.
Officials have not said whether the driver involved remained at the scene, nor have they announced any charges. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact investigators as the SIU works to determine exactly what occurred on the bridge overnight.
