A 33-year-old teacher will be deported to England after he was caught telling an undercover cop posing as a 14-year-old girl he wanted to have sex with her.
His offending in New Zealand didn’t stop there – he had already indecently exposed himself to three women and a 13-year-old girl .
David Charles Howell, 34, arrived in New Zealand in January 2024 on a working visa .
On Thursday, Howell could finally be named and was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment by Judge Stephen Bonnar .
The judge said as Howell has spent the last 10 months in prison, he will be released into the hands of immigration authorities who will take him back to England .
Howell had admitted a raft of charges, including grooming a child for sex, indecent communications with a child and making an intimate recording and an indecent act .
The 34-year-old was also placed on the sex offender register and ordered to make emotional harm payments of $1000 to the victims .
‘Extremely violated’
Howell’s victims weren’t in court on Thursday, however Judge Bonnar touched on the impact to them .
One spoke of how she had always felt safe in New Zealand, until Howell’s offending .
Another said they felt “extremely violated and angered” by Howell’s actions .
“She was 22 at the time and she found your behaviour to be menacing and violent,” the judge said .
The 13-year-old said Howell made her feel “very scared” .
The court heard how the teen would wake up crying and was frightened and anxious around unfamiliar people .
From teacher to living in a van
After arriving in New Zealand in early 2024, Howell soon found work at an Auckland high school as a maths teacher .
Stuff understands he lost that position after he allegedly attempted to contact a student via social media. He then accepted another contract at another school
