A US national has died after being pulled unconscious from the water while spearfishing at a popular beach in Sydney’s northern suburbs.
Emergency services were called to Shelly Beach in Manly on Tuesday after reports that two swimmers had been rescued from the water, including one man who was found unconscious.
Paramedics immediately commenced CPR on the man, believed to be in his 40s, before transporting him to hospital in a critical condition.
Despite emergency efforts, the American man later died in hospital.
The second swimmer, a man in his 20s, was not injured during the incident.
Pair Caught in Rip While Spearfishing
Police were told the two men, who were known to each other, had been spearfishing off Shelly Beach when they became caught in a rip current.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of swimmers in difficulty.
Authorities are continuing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
The deceased man’s identity has not yet been formally released.
Water Safety Reminder
The tragedy has renewed calls for beachgoers and ocean users to remain aware of changing water conditions and the dangers posed by rip currents, even at popular and well-frequented beaches.
Rip currents are one of Australia’s leading coastal hazards and can quickly carry swimmers away from shore, particularly in areas where conditions can change unexpectedly.
Anyone entering the water is encouraged to check local conditions, swim with others where possible and remain alert to safety warnings.
