Two young teenagers have been arrested in connection with a shooting in Champaign, Illinois, that left a 16-year-old boy dead and another teenager critically injured.
The shooting occurred Monday night near the intersection of North McKinley Avenue and Paula Drive. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 9:31 p.m. and arrived to find a 17-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds to his torso.
While assisting the injured teenager, police learned that a second victim might also be nearby. A search of the area led officers to a 16-year-old boy located about half a block north in the 1500 block of North McKinley Avenue. He had also sustained gunshot wounds.
Both victims were transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, the 16-year-old boy later died from his injuries. The 17-year-old remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Investigators quickly launched a homicide investigation and have since arrested two young teenagers believed to be connected to the shooting. Authorities have not publicly released the suspects’ ages or identities due to their juvenile status.
Police have not yet disclosed a possible motive or whether the victims and suspects knew one another. Detectives continue to gather evidence, review witness statements and determine the circumstances that led to the gunfire.
The fatal shooting marks another instance of youth violence affecting communities across the region, prompting renewed concerns about firearm access and safety among teenagers.
