FRESNO, Calif. — A 42-year-old man was shot and killed by Fresno police officers Friday after a lengthy standoff at a home in southeast Fresno, authorities said.
According to Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto, officers responded around 11:30 a.m. to a residence near the intersection of 11th Street and Burns Avenue after receiving a call from a family member reporting that their son had arrived at the property unwanted.
Family members also informed police that the man was armed and located in the backyard.
Nearly 30-Minute Standoff
Chief Casto said officers spent approximately 30 minutes attempting to peacefully resolve the situation.
Crisis negotiators were called to the scene and repeatedly urged the man to put down his weapon and surrender.
A police drone was also deployed to monitor the situation and help officers track the man’s movements in the backyard.
Despite repeated efforts to de-escalate the encounter, authorities say the situation escalated when the man allegedly presented the firearm in a threatening manner toward officers.
“The firearm was presented in a way as a threat to the officers, and shots were fired immediately thereafter,” Casto said during a press briefing.
Suspect Pronounced Dead at Scene
Two Fresno police officers fired their weapons during the incident.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said a firearm was located next to the suspect following the shooting.
Investigators have not yet determined whether the man fired his weapon at officers before he was shot.
“That’s a good possibility that he fired at the officers, but we’re not prepared to say that is 100% accurate at this time,” Casto said.
No officers or other civilians were injured.
Previous Family Disturbances Reported
Police said the man had been involved in previous disturbances with family members.
Chief Casto noted that a restraining order may have previously been sought against him, though investigators are still reviewing those details.
The man’s identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members.
Investigation Underway
The shooting remains under investigation and is being reviewed under standard officer-involved shooting procedures.
Authorities said this marks Fresno’s first officer-involved shooting of 2026.
Several roads near the scene remained closed for hours as investigators collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
