MELBOURNE, Australia — Skywatchers across Melbourne were treated to a rare celestial display after a meteor streaked across the night sky on Sunday evening.
The bright fireball, also known as a bolide, entered Earth’s atmosphere at about 9:50 p.m., creating a brief but spectacular flash visible across parts of Victoria.
The meteor was captured on dashcam footage by a driver travelling through Keilor Downs in Melbourne’s north-west. Another resident in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs reported seeing the object cast a vivid green glow across the sky.
Dozens of Victorians also reported witnessing the meteor as they traveled through Melbourne and surrounding areas.
The event lasted only moments, but its brightness and visibility left many residents amazed as images and videos of the fireball quickly circulated online.
Meteors become visible when space debris enters Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, heating up and producing a bright streak of light before burning up. Authorities have not reported any impacts or damage associated with the sighting.
