TOWN OF CALUMET, Wis. — A 16-year-old girl was killed and five other teenagers were injured after an SUV crashed and rolled over on Highway HH in the Town of Calumet on Saturday evening, authorities said.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls around 7:17 p.m. reporting a single-vehicle rollover near W1951 Highway HH. Deputies responded along with personnel from the Calumet Fire Department and the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office.
According to investigators, the SUV was traveling westbound when it failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway. The vehicle struck a culvert and driveway, became airborne, collided with a utility pole and rolled over.
A 16-year-old female passenger suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released pending notification of family members.
The driver, a 16-year-old girl from Sheboygan, and a 15-year-old passenger were transported by ambulance to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. Another 15-year-old passenger was flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee.
A fourth passenger, a 15-year-old boy, was taken by his parents to St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan for evaluation, while a 14-year-old passenger was not injured and was released to a parent at the scene.
Based on the preliminary investigation, authorities believe impairment was a contributing factor in the crash. The 16-year-old driver was arrested and booked into the Fond du Lac County Jail on suspicion of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.
Members of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team assisted with the investigation. Highway HH remained closed for approximately five hours while emergency crews responded and investigators processed the scene.
