NEW MEXICO — The body of a scientist who disappeared nearly a year ago has been discovered in a remote area of a national forest in northern New Mexico, raising new questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Authorities confirmed that the remains of 54-year-old Melissa Casias were found on June 2 in a secluded section of Carson National Forest. Casias, who worked at a U.S. national laboratory, had been missing since June 26, 2025.
According to reports, investigators discovered her remains in an advanced state of decomposition. Former homicide detective Thomas McNally, who had been assisting the family in the search for answers, said the body was found near a tree with a firearm located nearby.
Officials have not publicly announced a final determination regarding the cause or manner of death. However, reports indicate investigators observed evidence of a gunshot wound to the skull.
Family Seeks Answers
Casias’ family expressed grief following the discovery, saying they remain committed to pursuing answers about what happened.
“This is a lot to process. Our hearts are heavy and we fully intend to continue to pursue answers for justice,” the family said in a public statement.
Relatives also noted that the location where Casias was discovered had reportedly been searched previously during efforts to locate her.
