A homicide investigation is underway after a man was fatally stabbed at McClatchy Park in Sacramento early Tuesday morning, with one suspect taken into custody, authorities said.
According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers responded to the park shortly after 12:20 a.m. following a 911 call reporting an assault. Police radio traffic indicated the caller told dispatchers he was being attacked by a man armed with a pole and that he had a knife in his pocket and was reaching for it.
When officers arrived, they detained one individual and found another man suffering from multiple stab wounds near the park’s baseball field. Officers immediately began CPR until firefighters and paramedics from the Sacramento Fire Department arrived.
Despite emergency lifesaving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity after next of kin have been notified.
Crime Scene Investigators and homicide detectives remained at the park for several hours, photographing the scene, collecting evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. Investigators cordoned off portions of the baseball field and surrounding areas while forensic teams processed the crime scene.
Police said the detained individual later complained of back pain and was transported to a local hospital under police guard before being booked into custody. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or announced formal charges.
Investigators are working to determine what led to the fatal confrontation and whether the victim and suspect knew each other. Detectives are reviewing physical evidence, surveillance footage from nearby areas and witness statements as part of the investigation.
The Sacramento Police Department has not disclosed a motive for the stabbing and said the investigation remains active. Anyone with information is urged to contact Sacramento Police or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers.
