A 39-year-old woman from Mount Vernon was fatally shot in the Bronx early Tuesday, prompting an intensive police search for a gunman who fled the scene on a moped.
The victim, identified as Julia Andrews, was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest on Murdock Avenue in the Wakefield neighborhood shortly after midnight, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Emergency responders rushed Andrews to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts.
Investigators spent several hours processing the crime scene, collecting evidence and interviewing potential witnesses as they worked to determine what led to the deadly shooting. Detectives also examined a nearby vehicle that had been struck by gunfire, with bullets shattering the passenger-side window, raising questions about whether the victim was targeted while inside or near the vehicle.
Police said the suspect fled immediately after the shooting on a moped and remains at large. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not released a description of the gunman or disclosed whether they believe the victim was specifically targeted.
Family members described Andrews as a hardworking and caring woman who dedicated her career to supporting people with disabilities. They said she was looking forward to celebrating her 40th birthday next month, making her death even more heartbreaking for relatives and friends.
Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots shortly after midnight before seeing emergency crews arrive at the scene. The shooting has left residents shaken, with many expressing concern over the recent rise in gun violence in the area.
The NYPD is reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses and examining ballistic evidence to identify the shooter and establish a motive.
