Peel Regional Police have identified two 17-year-old brothers as suspects in the fatal shooting of a man in Brampton earlier this month and are warning the public not to approach them, saying they should be considered “armed and dangerous.”
The homicide occurred on Sunday, July 5, at approximately 3:40 p.m., near the intersection of Edenbrook Hill Drive and Earlsbridge Boulevard in Brampton. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a man in his 20s suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Victim rushed to trauma centre
Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment at the scene before transporting the victim to a nearby trauma centre in critical condition.
Despite lifesaving efforts by medical staff, the man later succumbed to his injuries. Police have not publicly released his identity, pending investigative and legal considerations.
What led to the shooting?
Investigators believe an altercation involving several individuals occurred shortly before shots were fired.
Authorities have not disclosed what sparked the confrontation or whether the shooting was targeted. Earlier in the investigation, police said it was unclear whether the victim and the suspects knew one another. Detectives continue to investigate the motive behind the killing.
Two teenage brothers identified as suspects
Following nearly two weeks of investigation, Peel Regional Police identified the suspects as 17-year-old brothers Shemii Whittaker and Shemel Whittaker, both from Brampton.
The pair are wanted on two counts of first-degree murder. A court order issued under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act temporarily allows police to publish their names and photographs until 5 p.m. on July 22, 2026, or until either suspect is arrested, whichever comes first.
Police warn public not to approach
Police say the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous and are urging members of the public not to approach them if they are seen.
Instead, anyone who spots either suspect is asked to call 911 immediately.
Investigators are also urging both teenagers to seek legal counsel and surrender to police voluntarily.
Harbouring suspects could lead to criminal charges
Peel Regional Police warned that anyone who knowingly harbours, conceals or assists either suspect could face criminal charges.
“Anyone found harbouring or assisting the suspects may be arrested and charged,” police said in their public advisory.
CCTV and witness appeal
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has CCTV, home surveillance or dashcam footage from the area around 3:40 p.m. on July 5 to come forward.
