McTAVISH LAKE, SASKATCHEWAN: A retired Canadian couple who travelled to a remote northern Saskatchewan lake for a fishing trip have died in what authorities say was a fatal bear attack, prompting conservation officers to locate and euthanize the animal believed to be responsible.
The victims have been identified by family members as Debbie “Deb” MacDonald and Jay MacDonald, both from Regina, Saskatchewan. Officials say the deaths are not considered suspicious, and the investigation is now being handled by wildlife and coroner authorities.
Where Did the Attack Happen?
The attack occurred near McTavish Lake, a remote fly-in lake located about 90 kilometres north of La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan.
The area is known for its forests, fishing cabins and abundant wildlife, particularly black bears, and is considered part of Canada’s “black bear country.”
What Happened?
According to Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Community Safety, La Ronge RCMP received a report of a suspected wildlife incident on July 15 after family members became concerned when the couple stopped responding to phone calls.
Officers responding to the remote area discovered Jay MacDonald dead near the lakeshore. Debbie MacDonald was initially missing, and search efforts resumed the following day before her body was located in nearby woodland close to the couple’s cabin. Authorities later confirmed both deaths were the result of a bear attack.
Who Were the Victims?
Family members identified the victims as Jay and Debbie MacDonald, a retired couple from Regina, Saskatchewan.
According to Debbie’s brother, Donjames LeBlanc, the couple had travelled to their cabin at McTavish Lake for a short fishing trip. The family became alarmed when repeated phone calls went unanswered and contacted police.
LeBlanc said Debbie worked as a nurse, while Jay had previously worked as a farm equipment specialist. Friends and relatives described them as experienced outdoors enthusiasts who regularly visited the lake.
Bear Located and Euthanized
Following an extensive search, Saskatchewan conservation officers located the bear believed to have attacked the couple.
The animal was euthanized and transported to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, where experts will perform a necropsy to help confirm its involvement and gather further evidence.
What Authorities Are Saying
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Community Safety confirmed that the RCMP initially responded to the incident but that the investigation has now been handed over to the Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Service and the Coroner’s Service because the deaths are not considered suspicious.
Officials said no additional information about the circumstances of the attack will be released until the investigation is complete. Residents, cabin owners and visitors have also been urged to remain vigilant while travelling in bear country.
Second Fatal Bear Attack in Saskatchewan This Year
The deaths mark the second fatal bear attack in Saskatchewan in 2026.
In May, a 27-year-old contractor working at a remote exploration camp northeast of Points North Landing was killed by a black bear. That bear was also euthanized following the attack. Fatal bear attacks remain extremely rare in Canada despite the country’s large bear population.
