Auckland, New Zealand: A taxi driver has been accused of driving while allegedly more than six times over the legal alcohol limit after a concerned motorist reported dangerous driving on State Highway 20 (SH20).
According to reports, the driver was seen drifting across lanes and nearly colliding with other vehicles as he travelled along the busy Auckland motorway. Alarmed by the erratic behaviour, another motorist contacted police, fearing a serious crash was imminent.
Officers later stopped the taxi and conducted alcohol testing. The driver allegedly returned a reading that was approximately six times above New Zealand’s legal drink-driving limit.
The incident has sparked concerns given the driver’s responsibility for transporting passengers safely. Authorities said the consequences could have been catastrophic had the vehicle not been reported and intercepted in time.
“I shudder to think what could have happened,” an official reportedly said, reflecting on the potential danger posed by the driver’s alleged actions.
The taxi driver is expected to face court proceedings over the incident. If convicted, he could face significant penalties, including licence disqualification and fines.
Police have renewed calls for motorists to never drive after consuming alcohol and urged members of the public to report dangerous driving when it is safe to do so.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with drink-driving and the vital role vigilant road users can play in preventing tragedy.
