Toronto, Canada: A 36-year-old Toronto man has been arrested following an alleged hate-motivated assault on a Muslim woman aboard a public transit bus in Scarborough earlier this year, police said.
Toronto Police announced that Thirukumaran Kandasamy has been charged with assault and criminal harassment in connection with the April incident. Investigators allege the attack occurred on a Durham Regional Transit bus near the intersection of Progress Avenue and Milner Avenue.
According to police, Kandasamy allegedly targeted a woman wearing a hijab, verbally harassing her before the situation escalated into a physical confrontation.
A video of the incident, later shared online by the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), shows the suspect allegedly shouting anti-Muslim slurs and calling the woman a terrorist before lunging toward her and kicking her.
The disturbing footage quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread condemnation from community leaders and advocacy groups.
Due to the alleged bias motivating the incident, Toronto Police’s Hate Crime Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation. Authorities said the victim suffered minor physical injuries but emphasized that hate-motivated incidents can have a significant impact on both victims and the broader community.
The case has reignited concerns about Islamophobia and hate-related incidents in Canada, with community organizations calling for stronger action against discriminatory attacks.
Kandasamy is scheduled to appear in court later this summer. Prosecutors are reportedly reviewing the case to determine whether hate-crime enhancements should be sought as part of the legal proceedings.
Police continue to encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses hate-motivated incidents to report them to authorities.
