TORONTO — A woman has died following a shooting inside a downtown Toronto apartment building, and a man is now in police custody as homicide detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
Toronto Police Service officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Saturday in the Garden District neighbourhood, near Jarvis Street and Dundas Street East. The shooting occurred inside an apartment unit at 251 Jarvis Street, according to investigators.
When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound inside the apartment. Emergency responders immediately began life-saving measures before paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Despite medical efforts, the victim later died from her injuries. Authorities have not yet released her identity, stating that next-of-kin notifications are still underway.
Police confirmed that a man was arrested in connection with the investigation shortly after the incident. However, no charges had been announced as of Saturday evening. Investigators are working to determine the relationship, if any, between the victim and the man in custody.
According to police, a resident of the building called 911 after hearing gunshots coming from the apartment unit. Detectives continue to examine evidence and interview witnesses to establish what led to the shooting.
The Toronto Police Service’s Homicide and Missing Persons Unit has taken over the case. Officials have described the investigation as being in its early stages and have not disclosed a possible motive.
Authorities are appealing to members of the public who may have information about the shooting to contact investigators. The homicide investigation remains active, and additional details are expected as the case develops.
