ONTARIO — Five children were killed and six other people seriously injured following a devastating two-vehicle crash near Kitchener, Ontario, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police.
The collision occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the rural intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12, about 35 kilometres northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo.
Police said the five children who died were all related. The victims included four girls and one boy ranging in age from 4 to 12 years old.
Six people remain hospitalized with serious injuries. Those injured include four adults — identified as the children’s parents and two grandparents — and a 15-month-old infant who were travelling in the van. The sole occupant and driver of the SUV involved in the crash was also seriously injured.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the injured victims to hospital for treatment.
Ontario Provincial Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and have not yet released the identities of the victims.
The tragedy has shocked the community as investigators work to determine what caused the fatal crash.
